22h12: Voici le vrai départ. Nous sommes serrés. Un coup d'oeil sur la gauche me montre Guy Conche. Je lui fais signe, avant de partir dans la nuit, une pensée pour notre ami Jacques, qui n'a pas pu prendre le départ à cause d'un accident...

...Et puis le départ. Des vélos partout, des trottoirs à éviter dans la Ville Nouvelle et des spectateurs qui voudraient bien nous toucher... Je ne prends pas de photos pour des raisons de sécurité, les jambes tournent bien, ça roule... Après le départ, je suis entrainé par ces nombreuses lumières et derrière moi, une cyclote américaine, ou canadienne, qui prévient des obstacles: "Slow... Slow... Slowing..."

 

...Then the start. Plenty of bikes, plenty of pavements to avoid, plenty of spectators who would like to touch us... For safety reasons, no photos. The legs and the bike go well... After the start, I am carried away by all these beams light and an american woman rider's voice who informs at each bump: "Slow... Slow... Slowing..."

Mardi 03h45: Longny au Perche (123kms-BPF 61). Soudain, dans la nuit, je repère le 4968, Joseph Keenan, rencontré sur internet. Nous discutons, il s'appele en fait "Slow JOE" et tente de faire PBP lentement sans s'arrêter, sans dormir... Il utilise un vélo couché à deux roues, un Rans (voir http://www.ransbikes.com)...

 

Tuesday 03:45am: Longny au Perche (123kms-BPF61). Suddenly, in the night, I see 4968, Joseph Keenan, met on internet forums. We talk for a while, he is called : "Slow JOE". He plans to do PBP very slow, without stopping and without sleeping... He rides on a Rans (see http://www.ransbikes.com)

 
     
 

 

Mardi 05h00: Mortagne au Perche (143kms). Avant le contrôle, une dame m'encourage dans la nuit, elle me reconnait, nous nous sommes rencontrés au 400k de Belfort et nous l'avions aidée avec nos frontales à réparer sa crevaison...

Mortagne au Perche: Des voitures d'assistance et beaucoup de monde au ravitaillement. Avec Pierre, nous mangeons un sandwich, un riz au lait et une banane pris dans nos sacoches. En repartant, je fais tomber ma sacoche, un anglais me demande si je joue au football... Vite nous repartons...

 

Mortagne au Perche: Some support cars and many people in the checkpoint. with Pierre, we eat a sandwich, a rice pudding and a banana we brought in our panniers... My front pannier falls down, an english rider asks me why am I playing football this morning... Quickly, we start again in the night...

Paris Brest Paris, c'est une randonnée mondiale dans le monde du cyclotourisme. Mais son vrai visage, c'est aussi celui-ci, une route jonchée de détrituts car certains n'ont pas le courage de trainer leurs déchets jusqu'au prochain contrôle. La Bretagne, poubelle du PBP?

 

Paris Brest Paris, it is an international cycling event. Unfortunately, you can see on PBP road, many wrapping papers like this one, because some of the riders don't have the decency to take their trash to the next control... Will Brittany become a Trashcan due to PBP?

14h45: 300kms: Voici le premier équipage, en Tandem, parti ce matin, dans la catégorie des 84h (Lisette et Jean-Pierre Kerhervé) . J'ai eu beaucoup de mal à les remonter pour la photo, Pierre a eu du mal à me suivre. Pas question de discuter, ça roule fort, ils sont suivis de près par les premiers cyclos solo, dont mon ami australien Steve Vesel, qui me dit avoir apprécié la recette des Profiterolles au Chocolat qu'il a trouvé sur mon site web...

 

02:45: 300kms: Here is the first Tandem in the 84 hours category (Lisette and Jean-Pierre Kerhervé). I had dificulties to follow them for the photo, Pierre had problems to join me. No time for them to chat, they ride very fast. They are followed by the first group riders in 84 hours, whom my australian friend Steve Vesel. He told me to have enjoyed the "Profiterolle au chocolat" cooking recipe...

Après Médréac, nous retrouvons Guy Conche. Nous allons continuer ensemble en emmenant Guy dormir dans le gîte que nous avions réservé...

...avant d'arriver à Saint Méen le Grand (406kms, 21h50). Après la tombée de la nuit, la route devient difficile car je m'endors sur le vélo (photo non disponible). Guy me voit vaciller sur le vélo. Enfin, je suis bien réveillé quand je vois vers Illifaut, le groupe des premiers coursiers qui commencent à rentrer sur Paris. Ils sont suivis de très près par plusieurs voitures d'assistance. Drôle de conception du vélo. Nous arrivons à Loudéac à 01h20 et nous trouvons le repos et le plus grand confort dans un gîte... Une Douche, un repas, une heure et demie de sommeil, une douche, un petit déjeuner pendant lequel le propriétaire nous annonce un parcours cycliste très difficile de Loudéac à Loudéac... Guy décide d'abandonner à cause d'une tendinite, nous repartons avec Pierre dans la nuit à 06h00...

At Illifaut, we see in the opposite way, the first riders on the return leg. Apparently, they have several pace cars behind them. Strange kind of riding. Anyway, we arrive in Loudeac at 01:20am and we rest and recover in a gîte with Isabelle... Shower, dinner, one hour and a half, another shower, breakfast where the proprieter tells us this part of the ride is very difficult... Guy decides to abandon here due to a tendinit, I start again with Pierre in the night at 06:00am...
